Student Involvement

To get involved with sustainability on campus, Bowdoin students have many avenues to choose from outside of academics. Formal fellowships, internships, and campus employment—both over the summers and during the academic year—provide real world experience in fields related to sustainability. More informally, campus clubs explore various principles of sustainability, including the Outing Club's "leave no trace" ethic, Organic Garden Club whose members volunteer their time to provide healthy, organic food for the dining halls, the Yellow Bike Club's promotion of alternative forms of transportation, and others. Campus-wide events, from the Dorm Energy Conservation Competition each October to Solar Fest and Eco Service Day each spring, provide additional ways for students to get involved with sustainability on campus.

Student Employment Opportunities

Fellowship Opportunities: Bowdoin's Psi Upislon Fellowship supports a summer of research by letting a student explore sustainability by working directly with an organization, agency or company that is focusing on the transition to a more sustainable society. Examples of projects include green design, calculating metrics of sustainability, and developing systems for conversion to alternative energy systems.  Read More.

Bowdoin Outing Club

Outing Club The Bowdoin Outing Club, located at the Schwartz Outdoor Leadership Center provides outdoors activities and education to Bowdoin's students. They send out a wide variety of trips each weekend including canoeing, sea kayaking, hiking, apple picking, whitewater rafting, telemark skiing, and winter camping. Trips are lead by trained student leaders, and are open to all members of the Bowdoin Outing Club. Learn More »

Green Global Initiatives

Green Global InitiativesGreen Global Initiatives recognizes that Climate Change is one of the most pressing issues that our generation faces. They are primarily focused on the organization of a spring speaker series to workshop with students on "green" jobs. Organic Garden Club

GreenhouseThe Bowdoin Organic Garden Club works both on campus as well as at the off campus Bowdoin Organic Garden to produce fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs for use in Bowdoin's Dining Halls. The Evergreens Club

Yellow Bike Club

Yellow BikeFor an annual fee of only $15.00 members of the Yellow Bike Club have unlimited access to the Yellow Bike Club’s fleet of new and used bicycles scattered around the Bowdoin campus. The YBC is an effort to make the Bowdoin community more sustainable and provide affordable transportation to the Bowdoin Community. All bikes are maintained students. Learn more »

The Bowdoin Co-Op
