Maine is known for its potatoes and lobster, blueberries and maple syrup. To celebrate the state's strong agricultural heritage and Bowdoin's superb dining, the 4th Annual Locavore Dinner topped off with a film screening of "Meet Your Farmer," a series of eight short films about farming in Maine.

In the spirit of the 2nd Annual Polar Bear Energy Challenge, academic and service buildings all over campus are shutting off lights, putting computers to sleep, and unplugging unnecessary electronics. Sustainable Bowdoin met up with several departments to figure out just what steps people are taking to help Bowdoin reduce its energy consumption.

The 2nd Annual Polar Bear Energy Competition started last week. Last year’s competition included just academic and administrative buildings; this year welcomes student dorms in an effort to increase awareness across all of campus. Collective energy savings will help “green” up Ivies.

The Energy Savings Dorm Competition for 2011 resulted in a net savings of 19,296 pounds of CO2, 24,995 kilowatt-hours, and $3,249 on campus. That's the equivalent of removing more than two average American homes off the grid for an entire year! Sustainable Bowdoin explores just how successful the 10th Annual Competition was.
