On February 22, 1997, the Commission on Residential Life's Interim Report was submitted to and approved unanimously by the Board of Trustees of the College. The report defines and describes a new conception of residential life for Bowdoin College based on a model of broad House membership that includes all students.
The College Houses provide a unique residential opportunity for Bowdoin students. These newly renovated structures, featuring catering kitchens and ample social space are focal points for student life.

Those who live in the houses are afforded the opportunity to live with a close knit group of students and learn from each other while helping to create and maintain an inclusive and vibrant residential community at Bowdoin which "promotes the intellectual and personal growth of individuals and encourages mutual understanding and respect in the context of diversity."
