Complementing Homer's Etchings, an intimate exhibition at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, which showcases Winslow Homer's virtuosic etchings completed in the 1880s, Steven Ross' new documentary, "Winslow Homer: Society and Solitude," will be shown Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., in Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center.

Inspired by a provocative moment spent viewing Homer's painting Searchlight at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ross, a communications professor at the University of Memphis and late-realized Homer convert, created "Society and Solitude" over a span of seven years.
The documentary features an interview with Linda Docherty, associate professor of art history, who has presented papers on Winslow Homer and curated a Homer exhibition at the Museum of Art in 2003.
Ross delved into Homer's biography through interviews with Homer historians and painters, collected footage from Homer's favorite New England haunts (in part from on-location shoots in Maine and Massachusetts), and examined nearly 200 of the artist's works.
In a thoughtful exploration of Homer's oeuvre and process, Ross' film both transports and elucidates as it offers avenues into the imagination of one of America's great artists.
The screening will be accompanied by a introduction by Ross, who wrote, produced and directed the film.
All events and lectures are open to the public unless otherwise noted.
