A number of important construction, renovation, and maintenance projects are currently underway at the College – improvements that will significantly enhance the academic program and student life. While we will continue to work diligently with our architects and contractors to minimize the impact on daily life at Bowdoin, a certain amount of noise and inconvenience is inevitable. The purpose of this site is to provide details about the major projects underway and a timetable for their completion.
The College will be incorporating building sustainability features into each of the construction projects. These standards include recycling waste and purchasing energy efficient lighting and products. Applying criteria from the Green Building Council and campus renovation standards, the College will strive to make the buildings energy efficient and environmentally sound. At the new Recital Hall and the Walker Art Building, the College will be using geo-thermal pumps and technology to heat and cool the buildings.
In May 2009, the Board of Trustees approved the project that includes the replacement of two aging and inefficient boilers with a new high-efficiency, low emissions, dual-fuel (natural gas and #2 oil) boiler and the installation of a back pressure steam turbine, which will produce an estimated 1.65 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
