Professional Organization Funding Application

We have been able to identify funding to support faculty service to national or international professional organizations.  All benefits-eligible faculty are eligible to apply; for visiting faculty, the activity must take place during the term of the appointment.  Examples of such activities include supplementary travel funds (beyond those available in the Faculty Professional Conference Travel Fund) to attend meetings related to elected service on a national board of a professional society or editorial meetings for a journal for which you are an editor, student assistance to help with mailing or other office work associated with a professional appointment, etc.  This fund is not intended to pay for professional dues, nor any activity already supported by existing faculty research or curricular funds, and the nature of the activities should be at the national or international level.  The normal maximum total award is $3,000, which may be spread over the term of appointment to a maximum of three years.  Because of the limited funding to support these activities, faculty may receive a maximum of one award in three years.

We anticipate funding only a few requests each year.  Applications should be 1-2 pages long and include:

  • a description of the activity, with links to the URLs or other information about  the professional organization (if appropriate)
  • detailed budget, including an outline of funding provided by the academic society
  • timetable of the activity
  • description of how this activity will further your research and teaching
  • an indication of how this activity relates to your use of funds available through the Faculty Professional Conference Travel Fund.

Applications should be submitted to acadaffs@bowdoin.edu for review by the Dean and Associate Deans.
